SMUD's Home Performance Program - Basic Option includes installation of a pre-set package of standard energy upgrades that all homes should have to improve their comfort, safety and savings.
Often homeowners are concerned about drafts, rooms that are too hot or cold, insufficient airflow, or energy bills that seem too high or are straining finances. Basic upgrades can help to alleviate a leaky home and increase comfort and home performance.
A home performance professional will assess your attic insulation, air infiltration, duct system performance, and conduct a safety inspection of the combustion appliances for safety issues.
Basic Option Upgrades
- 1. Air sealing to eliminate leaks and minimize drafts
- 2. Attic insulation to keep your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer
- 3. Sealing HVAC ducting to minimize leaks and maximize efficiency and comfort
- 4. Insulating water heaters and pipes to reduce heat loss

SMUD Qualified Energy Professionals
Qualified Energy Professionals are contractors under the SMUD Home Performance Program that complete training and mentoring on building science and energy efficiency upgrades to provide homeowners with a through evaluation of their home.
How It Works
- 1. Select a contractor—Select a contractor from SMUD's Qualified Professional Contractor list who can perform Basic Option upgrades. The list of contractors who are eligible to perform the Basic Option upgrades is available at smud.org/homeperformance.
- 2. Test your home—Your contractor will perform a thorough assessment of your home to determine needs and upgrades.
- 3. Install the upgrades—After the assessment, your contractor will install the package of Basic home improvement measures.
- 4. Enjoy the results—Comfort, safety and savings!

Depending on the measures you choose to do under the Home Performance Comprehensive Option you can achieve 20%-50% annual energy savings and your rebate will range from $2,500-$9,000. All energy efficiency upgrades must be completed and savings verified by March of 2012.
You must achieve a minimum of 20% energy savings to qualify for the rebate. The more improvements you do to your home, the higher the energy savings and the greater your rebate. You may also qualify for up to $500 in Federal Tax Credits. www.energystar.gov/taxcredits.
SMUD Qualified Energy Professionals
Qualified Energy Professionals are contractors under the SMUD Home Performance Comprehensive Option. SMUD Qualified Energy Professionals complete extensive training and mentoring on building science and energy efficiency upgrades to provide homeowners with a thorough evaluation of their home. The California Building Performance Contractors Association (CBPCA) inspects the work performed by the SMUD qualified energy professionals.
How It Works
- 1. Select a Home Energy Contractor—from SMUD's Qualified Energy Professional Contractor list to perform an energy assessment of your home. The list of Home Energy Contractors that can perform the Comprehensive Option is available at smud.org/homeperformance.
- 2. Choose your upgrades—Your Home Energy Contractor will evaluate your home and recommend cost-effective upgrades that will yield the best results for you and your family.
- 3. Install the upgrades—Once you select the upgrades that fit your needs, budget, and savings goals, your Home Energy Contractor will get the job done.
- 4. Enjoy the results and receive your rebate—Enjoy greater comfort, better indoor air quality, and an attractive return on your investment.
